South Gloucestershire Council Sets the Standard with Multihog MX for Multi-Purpose Maintenance

South Gloucestershire Council has been maximising operational efficiency across its network using the Multihog MX for over five years – proving how one compact machine can deliver big results across a wide range of public spaces.

Compact Yet Capable

Used daily, the council’s Multihog MX operates across cycleways, highways, and open spaces, providing unmatched versatility. The narrow chassis allows for easy access on tight networks—particularly valuable on cycle paths—while its 130hp engine and robust design deliver the muscle needed for heavy-duty applications like road planing.

Lee Hayward, Grounds Maintenance Supervisor at South Gloucestershire Council comments:

“The compact size of the machine makes it great for use on our cycle network, but it also has enough power to tackle heavy work like road planing.”

Versatile Attachments = Year-Round Performance

The Multihog MX’s modular design allows South Gloucestershire Council to take on a variety of maintenance tasks with confidence. Key attachments in use include:

  • Flail arm: For trimming verges and hedgerows along cycle paths
  • Weed brush: To maintain path width and prevent overgrowth
  • Planer: Used for targeted permanent highway maintenance and repairs

This multi-tool approach enables the council to streamline operations while maintaining high standards across different environments, allowing them to use the machine all year round.

Featuring a quick release mechanism, attachments can be changed over in just a couple of minutes – ensuring efficient services with minimal downtime.

Attachments are designed with the operator in mind. The front-mounted flail arm provides a much safer operation compared to traditional fixed rear or side mounted cutting equipment – providing better visibility and reducing neck strain. The weed brush features a brush and blade combination, able to cut between the kerb and vegetation to produce a clean finish.

The award-winning planer attachment has been used by over 40% of local authorities nationwide, providing a permanent repair by precisely cutting out the defected area – eliminating costly repeat visits.

On the machine’s versatility, Lee comments:

“We love it, the staff are very happy using it.”

Efficiency Without Disruption

The council has particularly valued the Multihog MX’s ability to perform work without disrupting public use of pathways. Thanks to its compact size, cycle paths can remain open during maintenance, earning praise from the local community, as Lee comments:

“Our cycleways have never looked so good, and we’ve had very positive feedback from the path users since we’ve been using it.”

Maintenance and Support

Thanks to live diagnostics and easily accessible service panels, the MX is built with year-round reliability in mind. Having been the sole UK supplier of the Multihog since 2010, Multevo pride themselves on having the most experienced in-house Multihog technicians who have been on hand for all aftersales support, with Lee describing the team as ‘really helpful and always prompt with responding to queries’.

Looking Ahead

With five years of dependable service, South Gloucestershire Council’s Multihog continues to exceed expectations, especially for routine and reactive works across busy and restricted areas. The versatility of the Multihog allows them to get to work without any delay.
