As part of International Women’s Day 2023, we caught up with Grace Leckie, Contracts Coordinator to discuss her experience of working in the highways sector and how we can all embrace equality.

Grace plays a pivotal role in the day-to-day running of our highway maintenance and traffic management contracts nationwide. She supports the management of numerous teams and resources whilst ensuring regular communication with our customers on performance and progress of schemes.

What has your experience been like working in the highways industry and for Multevo?

“My experience within the highways industry and Multevo so far has been really positive. Having come into this industry with no previous experience and taking a leap of faith in Multevo, I can safely say it has been one of my best decisions in my career so far. Joining an industry which tends to be perceived as male dominated can be daunting and nerve wracking however, I have received nothing but support from all my peers and management whilst never feeling out of place.”

“Having been given the opportunity to get involved in multiple areas of the business so far has helped me grow my knowledge and skill set which has provided the reassurance and confidence in presenting new ways of working and share my opinions and views across many aspects of the company.”

Why would you encourage other women to join the sector?

“I would encourage more women to join the sector by reassuring them that the impact from a female can be as impactful as a male. Whether you have previous experience or not, you can learn any skills which are required for specific roles and initiate new ideas which positively impact the business.” 

“Having been through the journey myself in joining the sector it was eye opening to see how many women are already making a significant impact to the industry. I would encourage any women who are hesitant in making the move into the highways industry to go for it with confidence and know there is always support available and new ideas waiting to be heard. “

Why do you think it is important to promote equality in the sector?

“I think it’s important to promote equality in the sector as it demonstrates an opportunity for everyone to explore the industry regardless of their differences, whilst gaining the same respect and fairness. Whilst the industry may still be predominantly male driven, it’s important for those women already part of the highways industry to promote the many opportunities available for women.”
