Committed to Carbon Reduction: Multevo obtain PAS2080 certification

PAS2080 sets out the framework for managing and reducing whole life carbon in infrastructure delivery, focusing on ‘early collaboration, defined roles, and integrated decision-making for sustainability’.

During the 2-stage audit, Multevo were able to demonstrate their commitment to reducing carbon, showcasing strong internal processes:

  • Recording and monitoring of carbon across the business.
  • Carbon reduction plan and targets in place.
  • Effective carbon management framework with innovation at the forefront.

As a multi-faceted contractor working across the highways, construction, and transport sectors, it was vital for Multevo to give confidence in the business’s commitments to reducing carbon.

The news supports Multevo’s dedication to reducing carbon emissions within their varied operations and business functions. Key projects have included the development and launch of the Hydrovo – a dual-fuel hydrogen and Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) powered multi-purpose highway maintenance machine – capable of displacing diesel consumption by up to 95%.

Launched by Multevo in 2021, the Hydrovo has been used by local authorities such as Glasgow City Council and Cheshire West and Chester Council, for a range of heavy-duty applications including pothole repairs and winter maintenance.

In addition, Multevo have worked closely with sustainability consultants PYE Management, establishing a carbon calculator tool for their Multevo method patch repair process – allowing them to introduce a range of initiatives to reduce carbon.

Multevo also contributed to the 1st and 2nd edition of the RSTA Carbon Guidance for Asset Management in Highways, a new national tool for understanding whole life carbon within highway maintenance projects.

Another key project has been Multevo’s involvement in ADEPT Live Labs 2: Decarbonising Local Roads in the UK. a three-year, £30 million, UK-wide programme funded by the Department for Transport. The programme features seven low carbon projects which will be monitored for 5-years to understand the long-term benefits. Multevo also recently signed the Live Labs 2 Pledge, showcasing their commitment to decarbonising local roads through making evidenced based choices, collaborating and sharing knowledge, and accelerating change.

Elsewhere, Multevo encourage employees to suggest ways in which the business can reduce carbon through their internal Eco Innovation Forum and Carbon Champions. This has resulted in the implementation of circular economies for PPE and traffic management signage, as well as driver behaviour monitoring and incentives to encourage changed behaviours.

On obtaining PAS2080, Stuart Allen, Director of Governance & Operational Standards at Multevo commented:

“Achieving PAS2080 certified status has meant a great deal to Multevo and myself.  The standard focuses on discussing carbon throughout the supply chain, not just the measurement of it. This triggers collaborative discussions with customers and supply chain, on how carbon could be reduced, by using alternative raw materials, alternative ways of working, or adopting innovative equipment which can minimise fuel and raw material use.”

“It has been great to see Multevo employees embrace the standard and sign up for the training that is available via the Supply Chain Sustainability School, which not only helps highlight the carbon savings that can be achieved in work, but also in all our day to day lives, making informed choices with lower carbon impact. “

Looking ahead, the business will soon be launching a UK-first low carbon innovation, which is set to change in-situ recycling possibilities for small scale patching and pothole repairs. The occasion will be marked with a live demonstration of the process at the LCRIG Innovation and Learning Festival on Wednesday 2nd of July at 2pm.
